First Drop of Crimson – Jeaniene Frost

First Drop

A complete surprise. I put this book on my TBR last year, I thought it would be another light PNR. What I didn’t expect was how brilliant the story was!

Book Synopsis:

The night is not safe for mortals.

Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows – her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield – and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s dark past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness – and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who craves a taste of her.

He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human – even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the demon nightmare together…

Because once the first drop of crimson falls, they will both be lost.

Don’t you love it when you find that diamond in the rough? I confess I am a reader that can get caught up in one author’s world at a time. So for me, Jeaniene Frost didn’t even blip on my PNR radar! Which is my fault really, now that I have joined a few Goodreads group that has all changed.

I confess I didn’t realise I wasn’t reading in order. So sadly some of the side plots confused me, not too badly but just enough to make me pause. The MC’s are brilliant, Denise handles situations like a pro. Well more like a person trying to make the best out of a crappy situation. Relatable. Spade’s backstory was entertaining and thought-provoking, Frost weaves in the character traits flawlessly.

The whole story goes at a steady pace, which was surprising as to how much happen in 371 pages! I did love the entire demon curse as part of the storyline; I won’t delve any further. Otherwise, it would turn into a spoiler. Let’s just say it’s a great spin and you will love the outcome!

Overall it was a fantastic read, the only critique I would have is simplifying. For someone who is new to the Night Huntress series, I found it was a little daunting. However, I could put it down to reading it out of order…
