A regency romance that surprised me with how modern it felt, it has been a while since I read a regency romance novel and I am not sure how I feel about it.

Abandoned by her parents, middle-class Georgiana Ellers has moved to a new town to live with her dreary aunt and uncle. At a particularly dull party, she meets the enigmatic Frances Campbell, a wealthy member of the in-crowd who lives a life Georgiana couldn’t have imagined in her wildest dreams.
Lonely and vulnerable, Georgiana falls in with Frances and her unfathomably rich, deeply improper friends. Georgiana is introduced to a new world: drunken debauchery, mysterious young men with strangely arresting hands, and the upper echelons of Regency society.
But the price of entry to high society might just be higher than Georgiana is willing to pay . . .

Next up in my Winter TBR is Reputation by Lex Croucher. I am a little conflicted by this book, it was gifted to me by a close friend – she and I are big fans of regency romance thanks to Julia Quinn (we were reading her books back in 2016).
So when I picked up this book with its pretty cover and interesting synopsis I thought it would be a quick satisfying read about a country girl navigating London society during the summer season. What I didn’t expect to find is the writing to sound modern – what I mean by modern, is Croucher’s character conversations felt as though how the people spoke today would not be out of place today. This was quite jarring for me, I confess I didn’t like it – while the drunken debauchery felt excessive at times it did feel believable enough for that time period.
The relationship between Georgiana and Frances started off well, but I just got irritated with the kind of predictable catty behaviour, it was mean girl esquse which was mentioned in the promotion of this book. But I think as a reader I didn’t enjoy this being part of the story. Also to note, please look up trigger warnings as I was quite surprised at a few scenarios that popped in this book – it’s very unexpected.
Overall, it wasn’t my cup of tea.
