Review: The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

I was a bit late to the game when it came to this epic urban fantasy set in England in 2059, and it didn’t disappoint!

Welcome to Scion. No safer place.

The year is 2059. For two centuries, the Republic of Scion has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in Europe.

In London, Paige Mahoney holds a high rank in the criminal underworld. The right hand of the ruthless White Binder, Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare and formidable kind of clairvoyant. Under Scion law, she commits treason simply by breathing.

When Paige is arrested for murder, she meets the mysterious founders of Scion, who have designs on her uncommon abilities. If she is to survive and escape, Paige must use every skill at her disposal – and put her trust in someone who ought to be her enemy.

Another one off my Summer TBR, and wow it was a good one! The Bone Season was released in 2013, but I have read the remastered version that was released in 2023.

Firstly, the world building by Shannon is impressive. The layers of societies and the history of how this dystopian world came to be is immersive and complex. There is a glossary in the back of the book which covers the terminology in detail, the fact it has this shows the level the author had gone to create this expansive world.

Secondly, I found the characters development well rounded and interesting. Shannon’s MC was 19 years old I believe, and she managed to balance the immaturity and growth of which didn’t irritate me.

Lastly, without spoiling the plot. The main storyline covers strong topics such as emotional manipulation, PTSD and discrimination. These themes are blended well into the MC development, and also into the worlds politically.

Overall, I adored reading this book. I would highly recommend it if you are a fan of urban fantasy, heavy world buildling.
