To be honest, I am chuffed with myself for getting this sorted. Last year, I put the self-destructing books in a pile near my bookshelf… then they just sat there, gathering dust.
For 2026, it’s going to be different! I have made a list on Goodreads to see which ones need to be read, and I have also put these books as compulsory reads every month for my TBR.
Some of these books have been sitting on my shelves for over 3 years, which is a bit silly, to be fair. However, they are the books that I might glance at and think “I should read this”, and some of them are ones that I have never had any interest in reading whatsoever.
The Self-Destructing Books
I have chosen 12 books, intending to read one per month. There was no system in how I picked them, only that I went by my gut instinct that they might have been on my shelves for a long time, and that I overlooked them a lot.

As I mentioned, these books will be rotated into my monthly TBR (no excuses). They have to be picked, and a minimum of 100 pages read, for me to be satisfied that it’s an honest attempt to read them. This is to avoid, at the end of 2026, when I send them off to the charity shops and/or sell them, that I did have a moment with them… unlike last year.
What I can see immediately from the books I have selected is that a quarter of them are Young Adult (YA). Which, to be honest, doesn’t surprise me. Around maybe 3-4 years ago, I stopped enjoying reading YA. Perhaps it’s due to my age, but I wasn’t really interested in reading about people in their late teens and early 20s.
I do hope this year I will get through more than one! Hopefully using audiobooks might help me get through a few and/or help me realise I really wasn’t going to enjoy these books.
But let’s see shall we?
