The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen

A fantasy romance that is a mixture of cute heartfelt moments mixed with the chaos of life and interesting supernatural world – also I love the main premise is focused around a morgue!

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the strange and magical wilds of Tanria. It’s an unforgiving job, and Hart’s got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness.

Mercy never has a moment to herself. She’s been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart, who seems to have a gift for showing up right when her patience is thinnest.

After yet another exasperating run-in with Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to “A Friend”. Much to his surprise, an anonymous letter comes back in return, and a tentative friendship is born.

If only Hart knew he’s been baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most—Mercy. As the dangers from Tanria grow closer, so do the unlikely correspondents. But can their blossoming romance survive the fated discovery that their pen pals are their worst nightmares—each other?

Review

* Non-Spoiler Review*

Damn, after months of a reading slump I finally break my spell with a fantasy romance – and what a damn cute on this was.

If you are after gorgeous male MCs who are broody, with a traumatic past and don’t want to share their emotions…then this could be right up your alley. The typical enemies to loves trope, except the enemies part is much more believable as this was developed over years.

I liked the way Bannen used letter writing as a gateway to not only learning about both MCs but also to setup a dialogue that might have felt clunky if there were talking face to face.

The supporting characters in this book were a hoot and I loved the splashes of diversity and the history of these characters. Storyline was paced well and the main antagonist didn’t overwhelm the whole plot.

Overall, an easy fun read that might wrench your heart in some places because it’s so sweet and endearing at times.
