Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away…because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Wow.

It’s been a very long time since I read a book within a day…

I held back reading this book as I felt it might have been overhyped, and fortunately it wasn’t. This book is a refreshing concept to hit the fantasy romance genre in a long time.

If you love hearing about dragons, then this is the book for you! The world building by Yarros is interesting and not overcomplicated like other fantasy worlds I have read as of late.

The romance is spicy (which I am here for!), but it’s blended well to feel appropriate for this story. It is your typical enemy to lovers trope, but it suits the situation the main character is not.

Supporting characters are unique and engaging, but they do not steal the show to make me want to see novella’s about them. I adore that there is swearing in this book, because it makes the world feel a little more rugged and earthy.

Overall, I am a convert. The dragons, the plot and the world building pulled me in fast – as well as the romance! I already have the second book, so I will be devouring it as soon as possible.

  1. Glad you loved this one, too! I was soooo addicted and couldn’t get enough of the dragons 🥰😂 Even though I also think the series has its flaws – namely, the writing 🙈 – I am already dying to read the third book!

    1. I am completely with you on that one! It’s the only reason I didn’t give it a 5 star…do we know when the third book will be released?
