Review

✍🏻Storyline – The show is based on the book, the Chinese web novel “Zhu Yu” (逐玉) by author Tuan Zi Lai Xi (团子来袭). I found the first half of the series (1-20th episodes) engaging. I enjoyed the village antics and learning about Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng, who went by the name Yan Zheng while he stayed there. I felt the story was more well-rounded, not only for the main leads but also for the supporting characters.

In the latter half of the series (20th-40th episodes), while the romance ramped up, the strength of the story between the two leads wavered. The main focus was on Fan Changyu, rather than a healthy balance between her and Yan Zheng, which had been the focus in the village.

The villains in the storyline were imposing; however, I found that one character was overplayed by the actor. Thus, taking away the character’s seriousness, which conflicted with the series’ tone.

Overall, a strong storyline, but it lost a bit of steam as the series was wrapping up.

👫Cast/Character Development The casting was impressive. I found the main leads engaging; however, like many reviewers, I found the supporting cast more interesting. Regarding character development, I thought the first half of the series was strong; you learn in detail the backgrounds of the main and supporting characters. What let me down was the main male lead taking a bit of a back seat in the second half of the series, which, in my opinion, detracted from their overall arc and development.

🎥Cinematography – I really appreciated how the show blended staging and CGI—it felt balanced and intentional. The lighting was a standout for me, not just in terms of world-building, but in how it was used to frame the actors themselves. Personally, I favored the village scenes over the palace or army camp, but you can tell the creators put immense effort into every detail to keep the series looking consistently great.

🎻Music – I’m a huge fan of a well-crafted Chinese drama score, if a track is addictive enough, it goes straight into my personal soundtrack playlist. While the music in The Pursuit of Jade is used quite effectively to set the mood, I haven’t come across any specific themes that have truly stood out to me yet.

Rating: 8/10
