Recently, I somehow managed to tumble completely down the James Bond rabbit hole! As I’ve been slowly and happily making my way through the massive film catalogue, it hit me that since they started as novels, I really ought to check out the source material to see how the movies hold up to Ian Fleming’s original writing.
To my absolute surprise, a huge chunk of what happens in the book actually made it onto the screen…even if the filmmakers did splash on some very liberal creative licence along the way. Casino Royale itself reads much more like a tight, gripping short story than the sprawling spy thrillers we see filling shelves today. I really enjoyed it, and to my delight, Bond felt much less flirty on the page than he does in the films, which I actually preferred! The only minor bump was that the ending felt a bit rushed, with Fleming wrapping up and summarising all the major events within a single short chapter.
Even with that quick wrap-up, it wasn’t nearly enough to put a damper on the experience. It was such a pleasant, easy read, and it has me genuinely excited to dive into more of the series to see how Fleming’s writing style evolves and where he takes 007 next.
