Desperate Measures by Katee Robert

Book Synopsis

My Savior… Or My Ruin?

One night, and my entire life went up in flames. All because of him. Jafar. As my world burned down around me, he offered me a choice. Walk away with nothing but my freedom… Or rise to his challenge and win my fortune back.

I bargained.

I lost.

Now Jafar owns me, and even as my mind rails against his rules, my body loves the punishments he deals out when I break them.

But a gilded cage is still a prison, I’ll do anything to obtain my freedom.

Even betray the man I’m falling for.

* Non-Spoiler Review*

Well, it’s been a while since I have read a spicy book. Just for clarification, a spicy book is where most of the plot is based around the romance scenes instead of a book with spice, which focuses on the plotline with the romance incorporated into it.

A pre-warning for those who are not expecting spice right away, this book hits heavy straight away. I did have to take a second to adjust, but once I got past the first chapter then I was away. I really enjoyed the spin on the Disney villains, set in modern times Jafar is second in command to Balthazar the King of Carver city. For 5 years he waited in the wings to overthrow the King, ever inching closer to power, but one thing set it all in motion – Jasmine.

Getting past the intense spice at the beginning, I really enjoyed this retelling. The story had enough plot for it not to sink into ultimate filth, and I really like Jafar and Jasmine together. The only issue which I know another reviewer has brought up is that Jasmine’s insecurities got a little repetitive, a little more evolution would have made her more of a sound character.

Overall, I enjoyed this smutty retelling. I will definitely pick up the next book in the series. Content warning: this is not a clean romance, please see my spice rating below to gain further info.
